Imaginary Scripted Interview

Sources: “Who Are The Uyghurs And Why Is China Being Accused Of Genocide?” From BBC news, we are gonna call this article source A. “ China’s Repression of Uyghurs in Xinjiang” . This article is from the Council on foreign relations, we are gonna call this article source B. “ New Details Of Torture, Cover-Ups In china Amnesty International Report” from NBC-news and we are calling this source C.

Ms. Paulino: Tell me what you guys specifically talked about in your articles?

Source B: I’m gonna start first, well mainly I answer questions that the audience might have about the situation of the concentration camps in China.

Source A: Questions like what? And can you go more into details about the answers of the questions?

Source B: Alright.

Source B: I answer the most asked questions like “ when did mass detentions of Muslims start? Why is China detaining Uyghurs in Xinjiang now? And What do Chinese officials say about the camps?” According to some documents I have from government officials, as you can see, Uyghurs and other Muslims, including some ethnic Kazakhs and Uzberks, have been detained by Chinese authorities since April of 2017. The detainees seem to have been targeted for a variety of reasons but mostly because they are Muslims, and I keep on going on and on about this.

Ms. Paulino: Thank you source B, who else is gonna speak?

Source A: I’ll go, I inform the listeners on who are the Uyghurs and why other governments accused China of genocide. I also have videos of interviews with the family members of those who are being detained in those concentration camps. They showed images of their loved ones and pleaded with the Chinese government to set them free. In the next video we talked to China’s foreign ministry about some video evidence we had on the concentration camps, while looking at the video in quotes he said “There is no such concentration camp in Xinjiang”.

Ms. Paulino: Can one of you tell me what you mean by Uyghurs? The two of you have used it at least once is your explanation?

Source C: Uyghurs are what they called the majority of the population of Chinese Turkestan, which is the one being targeted right now by the Chinese government.

Source B: That’s correct, I agree with that.

Ms.paulino: Glad to hear from you source C, I was starting to think you left.

<sigh>

<silence>

Ms. Paulino: tough crowd I see, anyways my next question is what do you want the government to do or say about this situation? Let’s hear from you again source c.

Source C: We demand that the United Nations investigate all the allegations against China, for the imprisonment of Chinese Turkest people. Their human rights are being taken from them for no reason other than believing in another religion.

Source A: I agree with you.

Source B: Also, to give public statements of the actions they’ll be taking against the Chinese government so that the people would know and get more information.

Ms. Paulino: Alright guys, my last question for this interview is what do you think the family members that live outside of China have to say?

Source C: I have a video of one of our interviews, interviewing the family members of two men who have been convicted to 15 years in prison with false allegations. The family members ask and plead for mercy for their family, and a Chinese official tells the reporter how he denies all allegations about false imprisonment.

Source A: We too, have videos of interviews with family members and a captive who had the chance to escape and decided to tell us her story. The detainee describe her time in the concentration camp as “hell” where she was sexually assulted, and more.

Source B: Unlike B and A, I’m more of a documents guy where I show details and location of the concentration camps and where everything is going down. I have leaked documents from some Chinese authorities who decided to be the good guys in this case.

Ms. Paulino: Well that’s the end. Thank you guys for informing me on this topic, it was a pleasure to have you all today.

Source B: No, thank you for having us.

Rhetorical Devices: Procatalepsis and Distinctio

Due Wednesday 7/20

For EACH rhetorical device, please post:

1. Two examples of the device in use in the world (ideally, one you witnessed in real life or made up yourself. Try not to just Google examples)

2. Any relevant context for understanding the sentence (you may not need to write anything for this part if it’s clear on its own)

3. An analysis of what the device ADDS to the speaker’s message.

Do NOT just explain to me why your examples are examples of your device. That is not useful to either of us — we both know they are, and the goal isn’t to prove that you know the definition. The goal is to show understanding of WHY someone might use the device in a particular situation and WHAT they might be trying to achieve with it.

WHY might someone use this particular example of procatalepsis or distinctio? What are they achieving? Your analysis should talk about the SPECIFIC EXAMPLES that you chose.

So: you should have FOUR examples + analysis total this week.

Reminder: If you are doing your presentation on a set of devices, you do not have to do the examples + analysis for those devices.

Scripted Interview

We will do this during class on Tuesday 7/19. It is one of the 8 required assignments that all ENG 101 students at John Jay must do.

Choose around 3 sources related to your topic to work with for this activity.

Write an imaginary conversation where you interview the authors of your sources about the topic of your final project.

You should ask at least three open-ended questions that allow the authors to give complex, interesting answers (3 points)

Each of the authors should respond to at least two of your questions, giving a complex, interesting answer. (4 points)

One author should respond directly to another author’s comment at least once (1 point)

One author should ask another author a question at least once, and that author should answer (2 points)

You are imagining what they will say, based on the research you have done so far. You are making up the dialogue– you do not need to use direct quotes from the thing you read.

Total: 10 points

Format the interview like a script. For example:

Olivia: What is the most important thing you have learned in college so far, and why?

Student 1: I learned that I have to be really careful about planning my time, because it’s easy to get behind, and if you’re behind, you don’t have time to do a very good job on your assignments or think about them a lot. So you learn less, even if the material is easy.

Olivia: I agree, that’s super important!

Euphemisms and Dogwhistles

Due Tuesday 7/19

WHY might someone use this particular euphemism or dogwhistle, instead of speaking more directly?

So: you should have FOUR examples + analysis total this week.

Reminder: If you are doing your presentation on a set of devices, you do not have to do the examples + analysis for those devices.

Project proposal

General topic & interest:

I’m interested in writing my final project about the society issue of mental health in individuals. Mental Health plays a huge role in our daily lives for many different types of reasons. The interests in Mental health are due to I’ve seen my close friends living with mental health. The way it has affected them makes me see an interest in learning and writing an essay to describe the struggles that not only our loved ones can go through but society in general. There are always multiple reasons on why people take a certain action even when it comes to the people who harm the environment. Sometimes I wonder why certain people end up alone such as are homeless, end up with no jobs, with no family or end up committing crimes. Multiple times I then answer my own questions from my own experience of having family members and a best friend having mental issues. I tell myself “People become like this because of their traumas and experiences they go through which makes them become the way they are.”

3 Questions:

  1. After the Pandemic how has the mental health impacted an individual changed after 3 years on regular people?

It has caused major changes in an everyday routine such as the jobs that people have had, how different types of relationships with others have changed, and so much more..

  1. At what point does an individual know when to seek help?
  • Once an individual has noticed changes in their daily routine such as the lack of sleep, having no appetite or having appetite, having a certain behavior or having a lot of emotions in one day.
  1. What are major changes that people can do to be brought up to help others with Mental Health?
  • As a society to bring more attention to how we see others such as their behavior which is a main focus
  • The way individuals have their relationships with others
  • When people commit crimes and blame their mentality for doing a specific action
  • The traumas people lived through when they were a child and how it has made them become the person they are today
  •  How adults transition onto the elder age based on everything they saw and experience

Justification:

Mental Health is a very important topic because of how it has affected thousands of people living today in America and every other part of the world. The impact it holds on people is the way it changes society and leads others to be. There have been different cases in which some people have depression which leads to death because they didn’t resist. Other cases lead to people with depression to commit crimes, robberies, assaults etc that affects society because it damages negatively. It’s important to have answers to the questions because I and others can try to understand why certain things lead to people doing what they do to others and society.

Research:

I will need to have articles that relate to the specific topic of mental health. I will use the resource mainly of the news because there have been cases where it talks about how people have committed crimes because they have gone “insane” due to the lack of abandonment and loneliness. An important resource I feel is very interesting is the experience I’ve seen my own brother and my best friend go through which I can be able to talk about how it affects my relationship with them and the relationship with others. The information that I need to find out first is how has mental health changed throughout the years such as after the pandemic what has grown more in society? Crimes and Robbery. I believe what will be difficult to find is how many percent of people have had mental health after the pandemic since there are many sources that have a different percentage and it’s important to have a specific one.

Research Proposal

This proposal is going to investigate the how and why of drug abuse. I plan to investigate why people abuse drugs and how they become addicted in the first place. It is important to understand the causes and effects of drugs on humans. This is an issue that has no specific target, but many victims.

Who is most susceptible to opioid addiction? Why? How does one become addicted? Why is researching opioid abuse important? Why should one care? What are opioids and what makes them so addictive? These are all questions I intend to answer in the final paper. Knowing the answers to these questions can help bring awareness to the lives lost to addiction and those in danger of becoming addicted. It is also important to educate others who may know addicts or are in danger of becoming addicts. This proposal is not only educational, but it can inspire others to seek rehibilitation. Opiates are very often administered by doctors, which opens the many doors to drug abuse and the world of many different drugs. Before investigating these questions I must first investigate what opiate addiction is and its side effects. I plan to investigate specific opiates like oxy, morphine, codeine, and fentanyl, the most common. Personality traits and disorders are great contributing factors towards addiction.  Drugs are known to alter cognitive abilities like decision making and judgment, which is an important contributing factor to increased drug use. The more severe their condition, the more likely they are to adopt a dependency to opiates, more commonly prescribed. As well as genetic factors however, the biological aspects of these effects on the brain specifically will be difficult to understand. I need to find out what opiates are the most addictive and the most commonly prescribed, as well as who is at the greatest risk of addiction and why they are. There are certain behaviors and influences that build up to drug abuse and  I need to research the contributing factors to drug addiction in general before diving deeper into the specific demographics.

Too many people fall victim to drug addiction and even worse die from it. A lot of these people are viewed as just another junkie or addict, but it goes deeper than that. Many also use drugs to cope, or just for fun, but why damage your body mentally and physically when there are other healthier ways to heal. None of these people are born addicts, some may be born with dependency but it is not by their choice.  This is relevant to my career choice because I want to study forensic psychology, which is why I chose to research this topic and I find it very interesting. In today’s society many young adults are falling victim to drug addiction and many lives are being lost from it. I’ve witnessed these victims being simply labeled as addicts when it is way more than that. These people needed help but didn’t get it, so I chose this topic because it can help anyone out there who feels they are at risk or know anyone who is. It’s particularly compelling since I’m a young adult and live in a society where drugs are so easily accessible, it’s important to recognize the risks and dangers of opiate use, even if it was prescribed by a doctor. The prescription doesn’t change the level or risk of addiction and many are blind to that.

I know that people are prescribed certain opiates and become dependent on them, but addiction goes deeper than that. Opiate addiction impacts people from adolescence to adulthood, especially those who suffer from injuries or and illnesses. I also know that drugs damage your brain especially when it’s still developing, for example babies in the womb and all through adolescence.  People grow up or reside in unhealthy environments that abuse drugs which heavily influences them, a gateway to drugs and on to addiction. However, some people are mentally ill and are more vulnerable to becoming addicts.

Final Project Proposal

Due Monday July 17 (post on course site using the category “Student Work”)

Often, both academics and writers outside of the university do not just write an essay and submit it. Journalists pitch article ideas to their editors, and others might need to propose a topic before getting approval to write it.

What does a proposal look like?

  • A proposal is typically about 2 pages, although it can be slightly longer (1 point)
  • You can use “I” (like “I plan on investigating ______”)
  • Use a formal academic style (1 point)

What should you include in this proposal?

  • The general topic you are interested in researching and writing about (1 point)
  • Three “inquiry questions” relating to your topic that you would like to research/answer/find out more about. (3 points)
    • These should not be questions you already know the answer to, although you can have a hypothesis about what the answer will be.
    • They should also be specific, focused, and answerable within the assignment
    • The inquiry questions should be complex enough that you can’t just quickly Google the answer
  • A justification for why you chose your topic and why these inquiry questions are worth investigating (3 points)
    • Why is this topic important?
    • Who does this topic impact?
    • Why is it important to know the answers to your questions?
  • A research plan (2 points)
    • What do you need to find out in order to answer your inquiry question(s)?
    • What information is important to find out first before you investigate other aspects of your question(s)?
    • What information do you think will be difficult to find or understand?

Meeting the Above Requirements: 11 points

Turn the Proposal In On Time: 2 points
