Final Project Proposal

Due Monday July 17 (post on course site using the category “Student Work”)

Often, both academics and writers outside of the university do not just write an essay and submit it. Journalists pitch article ideas to their editors, and others might need to propose a topic before getting approval to write it.

What does a proposal look like?

  • A proposal is typically about 2 pages, although it can be slightly longer (1 point)
  • You can use “I” (like “I plan on investigating ______”)
  • Use a formal academic style (1 point)

What should you include in this proposal?

  • The general topic you are interested in researching and writing about (1 point)
  • Three “inquiry questions” relating to your topic that you would like to research/answer/find out more about. (3 points)
    • These should not be questions you already know the answer to, although you can have a hypothesis about what the answer will be.
    • They should also be specific, focused, and answerable within the assignment
    • The inquiry questions should be complex enough that you can’t just quickly Google the answer
  • A justification for why you chose your topic and why these inquiry questions are worth investigating (3 points)
    • Why is this topic important?
    • Who does this topic impact?
    • Why is it important to know the answers to your questions?
  • A research plan (2 points)
    • What do you need to find out in order to answer your inquiry question(s)?
    • What information is important to find out first before you investigate other aspects of your question(s)?
    • What information do you think will be difficult to find or understand?

Meeting the Above Requirements: 11 points

Turn the Proposal In On Time: 2 points

Total: 13 points

The topic I will be focusing on is on students’ mental health and social media. Mental health means a person’s condition concerning their emotional and psychological well being. This topic is very important because it is a very common Illness and maintaining a positive mindset is a must since your mental health is what helps define your behaviors, thoughts and emotions. However, social media can be very toxic at times if you don’t know how to handle it or use it because everybody sees your business and has an opinion about everything you post whether it is negative or positive. To add on, due to this issue not being brought up so often most people aren’t even aware of the symptoms mental illness contains or what causes the illness and leads people to not seek help. Struggling with mental illness is very common in teens and young adults because they are all trying to figure out what to do with their lives or maybe just the simple fact of a big drastic change in your own life can cause mental illness. As well as, school/college can be very stressful when it comes to studying for tests, being overwhelmed with a lot of things at once or even writing a big final paper. An example of mental illness is depression. Depression is a serious mood disorder illness that causes a continuous feeling of sadness and loss of interest in things you normally like to do. Depression does not only affect your mood but also contains risk factors like your appetite can become poor, you feel more stressed every day, and you don’t want to be around people. However, for this research I brainstromned three major questions that will help debunk the research. Those questions are, Does the amount of time you spend on social media have an influence on students’ mental health? What symptoms are experienced regarding mental health?, and What gender gets affected the most by mental health ?. To add on, Is very important to know the answers to these questions because it will help debunk and understand if the amount of time you spend on social media can become very unhealthy for your mental health and also help figure out solutions on how to consider helping your mental health. In this research in order to find out the answer to the research questions, academic and non academic resources will be used.

In this research paper I intend to get my readers to understand my passion for banning horse drawn carriages in NYC.
Every being carries life. Some people tend to think that just because some beings don’t have the same capability of consciousness or ‘morality’, their lives don’t matter as much. Although it is true that animals don’t have the same levels of thinking that we do, they still have feelings and are breathing beings.
I believe that animals are the most innocent version of life. They do nothing but mind their business and try to survive. The true savages and ruthless animals are human beings. We invade their homes and use them for our advantage. We put them in aquariums, zoos, and circuses, taking away the freedom that should always belong to them.
Animals are kind creatures who attack when they’re afraid and feel the need to defend themselves. Animals are compassionate, loyal, smart, and cute! I don’t understand how humans can see an animal being used and turn their back on them. We are ignorant, and that is the worst thing that we can be.
I live in New York and I am now attending a college in Manhattan; a famous spot for tourists. In Manhattan you will encounter a knock off Batman, big bright lights, people with clothes drawn on, street dancers, crackheads, artists, and horse drawn carriages. Every morning that I walk through the streets of Manhattan I see a couple of horses, some looking tired and skinny, pulling 1000 pound carriages. What is the difference between traveling on a horse drawn carriage rather than an electric powered vehicle? How does climate affect the health and life longevity for these horses? How does stepping on hard pavement for hours without end affect their bones?
The importance of this topic can not be overlooked. It is not what animals can do for you but what you can do for animals. Horses are meant for large grassy areas where they are fed and taken care of, not in busy cities where they swerve through traffic and have to work during extreme weather. People have been fighting for this tradition to stop and mayor Bill de Blasio has actually made multiple promises to try to stop it. However, these creatures need our help now.
It has been proven that the fumes and the volume of the crowds and cars affects the horses anxiety and health. They are forced to go through harsh labor and are sometimes not fed as much as they’re supposed to and don’t get enough/ long breaks.
