We will do this during class on Tuesday 7/19. It is one of the 8 required assignments that all ENG 101 students at John Jay must do.
Choose around 3 sources related to your topic to work with for this activity.
Write an imaginary conversation where you interview the authors of your sources about the topic of your final project.
You should ask at least three open-ended questions that allow the authors to give complex, interesting answers (3 points)
Each of the authors should respond to at least two of your questions, giving a complex, interesting answer. (4 points)
One author should respond directly to another author’s comment at least once (1 point)
One author should ask another author a question at least once, and that author should answer (2 points)
You are imagining what they will say, based on the research you have done so far. You are making up the dialogue– you do not need to use direct quotes from the thing you read.
Total: 10 points
Format the interview like a script. For example:

Olivia: What is the most important thing you have learned in college so far, and why?
Student 1: I learned that I have to be really careful about planning my time, because it’s easy to get behind, and if you’re behind, you don’t have time to do a very good job on your assignments or think about them a lot. So you learn less, even if the material is easy.
Olivia: I agree, that’s super important!

Paulina: why do low-income families never go up the ladder?
Authour1: well this is all a social experiment where you have many people surpass and you have others who fail and continue the cycle.
Paulina: wow when will this end? What will it take for this curse to break?
Author2: Well it would take a lot of work. Collectively everyone is not in the mindset to move up. People and I mean us low-income have accepted this life and we are letting these gentrifiers sabotage us and our history. It’ll take multiple communities joining together in this fight.
Paulina: You are absolutely right!
Hi Paulina,
Just make sure you take a look back at the assignment instructions– 3 questions, each author responds to at least 2 questions, 1 author asks another author their own questions (and the person responds), and 1 author should respond to another author’s comment

Cesar- what do you think that could’ve happened if they just barged in to take down the active shooter instead of waiting for backup ?
Maggie Severns- in most cases the shooter could’ve been taken down if the officers followed the protocol to take down an active shooter, but for this scenario the officers that arrived first didn’t go in mainly because of the advantage the shooter had. It could’ve ended with some officers dying but the shooter wouldn’t have taken as many lives if the first responders took him down but it was too risky at the moment.
Zach Despart – yes some officers could’ve gotten hurt or died if they responded first to the scene but if they did that they would’ve prevented the deaths of many children and that’s what they should’ve done.
Cesar- What did the officers need to be well trained mentally for this kind of situation?
Sacha Pfeiffer- they would need to move forward and locate where the shots are coming from. It doesn’t matter waiting for backup or if they are afraid. What matters is to locate the shots breaking down doors or even shooting through doors because they know the shooter has proven that they will kill so it’s up to the first responder to prevent that from happening and not let their emotions stop them.
Cesar – I completely agree!
Why In these kinds of situations is neutralizing the shooter first then attending to people’s aid more important?
Zach Despart- yes the reason why its so important is because if the authorities take their time to take down the school shooter more innocent lives would be taken
Away, so it’s important that the danger is taken out quickly so people can receive aid without risk.
Zach – Sacha, why do emotions get in the way when cops are facing an active shooter?
Sacha – the reason why is because they have fear of their own lives and their safety but it’s hard to point it at one thing because there are many factors why they did not neutralize the shooter fast enough. But we do know the officers did not follow the protocol to stop this tragedy.

Hi Arianny,
Please refer back to the assignment instructions– each author should respond to at least TWO of the questions, so there should be at least 6 responses total, plus the discussions back and forth between the authors.
